Mutual Aid Updates
Last summer, Foster Advocates conducted our first state-wide study, making Minnesota the only location with state-specific data on the COVID-19 impact on Fosters. Recognizing the immediate needs of Fosters due to COVID, and thanks in part to additional support from the Graves Foundation, we provided $200 in mutual aid to 50 Fosters across Minnesota.
This fall, we followed up with mutual aid recipients. Everyone found the mutual aid beneficial, and use aligned with the top needs highlighted in our report. 42% of recipients used funds for basic needs (groceries, house supplies, clothes), 37% on rent and other bills, and 21% for other essentials. Overwhelmingly, recipients agreed that more mutual aid (for more Fosters) is needed during the pandemic. As one Foster said:
“I do believe additional aid for Fosters during this time would be beneficial. I know there are individuals in less fortunate situations than myself who would greatly benefit from increased monetary aid. Fosters have lost jobs, housing, schooling, support systems. Fosters aging out are in a whirlwind of scariness amplified by a pandemic where work is unstable, and housing is hard to get in.”
We’re proud to have provided cash assistance for Minnesota Fosters–and we recognize this isn’t enough. We call on the state and ALL Minnesota counties to provide direct assistance to ensure Fosters aren’t left behind in pandemic responses.
