Standing with Black Fosters

As local and national attention centers on the trial of former Minneapolis police officerChauvin, Foster Advocates stands firmly in calling for justice in the form of conviction and structural change in policing.

We recognize the long-standing impact of over-policing, structural racism, and white supremacy on Fosters across the state. Child welfare and police systems are deeply intertwined, and the disproportionate impacts of police misconduct and brutality against black, Brown, and Indigenous populations are paralleled in the disproportionate impacts of family disruption through the child welfare system.

We will continue to support and uplift Foster voices as we advocate for equitable systems. Over the next few months, we will be addressing the impacts of trauma and the trial in relationship with our state-wide Foster leaders, and we will uplift events and resources on our social media to support Fosters across the state during this time.

As we named after George Floyd’s murder, Foster Advocates strives to be unapologetic in our approach to building long-term capacity and power in and with communities of color. We do this through organizing across lines of difference and with the spirit and knowledge that freedom for one of us is freedom for all of us. Black Fosters matter, Black Familiesmatter, and until #BlackLivesMatter, none of our lives do.

Equity for Fosters is deeply intertwined across movements for shared liberation fighting larger systems of injustice and oppression. At FosterAdvocates we will continue to foster change towards anti-racist systems that better serve Fosters across the state.

In Solidarity,

Foster Advocates
